World Environment Day (WED) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. WED is hosted every year by a different city and commemorated with an international exposition through the week of June 5. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), also created in 1972, uses WED to stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action.
World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round and climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone from everywhere. World Environment Day is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.
From the year 2002 the CES organizing the WED programme. In this programme cash prize for Rs. 20,000/-, a certificate for Prakruti Mitra and Rs. 10,000/-, a certificate for Prakruti Bandhu awards were given for organizations and individuals every year at the district level. Subsequently, from the year 2007 same awards were given at the sub-division level. Then after, from the year 2009, same awards is giving at the block level.
The Centre is organizing the state level function for the celebration of World Environment Day with financial assistance from the Forest & Environment Department, Government of Odisha. The centre is also organizing state level drawing & painting competition, Eco-Model exhibitions, rally etc. on the eve of this day in every year.
